about
Viola Liuzzo was a hero of the civil rights movement. A white woman from Detroit, she answered Dr. King's call to come to Selma, Alabama in 1965 to help with the Selma to Montgomery marches. While helping to shuttle activists to and from the Montgomery airport Viola was murdered by the Ku Klux Klan. She was 39 years old. There is much more to Viola's heroic story. Google her name to learn more.
Many years later the brilliant songwriter Arlan Feiles wrote this song as a tribute to Viola. It has been recorded several times and our recording adds a new element.
lyrics
Viola
by Arlan Feiles
We could all sit down and rewrite the Constitution
Or we could fight it out and start up a revolution
Either way is fine with me but you refuse to see
you’re blind to the resolution
Hold tight we’re gonna fight yes I told you
I hope that you’re with me Viola
We can take this song stream it from ocean to ocean
We can set it off start up a big commotion
We take hands but we have forgotten
That love is all we’ve got and
I believe that I can show you
Hold tight we’re gonna fight yes I told you
Stand tall stand up right you’re a soldier
Gonna to take this head on shoulder to shoulder
I hope that you’re with me Viola
Break these chains of silence
Break these chains of violence
We will walk these miles and go home
Hold tight we’re gonna to fight yes I told you
Stand tall stand up right you’re a soldier
Gonna take this head on shoulder to shoulder
I hope that you’re with me
I hope that you’re with me Viola
I hope that you’re with me Viola
